Who am I gonna call?
The bank manager, probably.
Because one of the rarest cars in Europe is coming up for auction and I need it.
It’s a 1959 Cadillac Ambulance, but more than that, it’s a nigh on identical to the car from Ghostbusters. Yup. Ecto 1.
As a massive fan of Ghostbusters since childhood, Ecto 1 ranks pretty near the top on my list of cool cars, the combination of 50s America styling with some of my earliest memories cemented the car in my memories, even inspiring me to create my own, Mini Clubman Estate-based version. There can’t be many in the UK and now one’s coming up for auction, as part of a Historics at Brooklands auction on 25th September.
The Cadillac was restored by coach builder Chris Reynolds, who spent £65,000 restoring the car and turning it into a full blown Ecto replica. OK, so it might not look as cool on the streets of Exeter as it would around Manhattan, but just imagine the looks you’d get, the 6.5 litre V8 guzzling petrol at an insane eight miles per gallon!
Apparently the car was destined for the scrap heap, before being rescued and extensively restored, including having a new roof put in place after the original had been cut out and binned.
Auctioneers Historics reckon the Caddy will fetch somewhere between £75,000 and £85,000. Time to start checking behind the sofa for change…
