A perfect Sunday…

Ralf gets ready to hit the water again
I don’t normally use my blog as a diary, but I’ve had such a bloody good day today, I wanted to blog about it.
Today I spend the day with Sarah and Ralf in West Dorset, on the Jurassic Coast, at Durdle Door and Man O’War beach and what a wonderful day we had.
Possibly the best weather we’ve had all summer, it was fantastic. Warm and sunny, Ralf immediately made for the water for a swim, and not wanting to miss out, I decided I’d join him. The water was as clear as glass, and it certainly was fresh, it blew the cobwebs out, I can tell you. A really beautiful part of the world, Durdle Door is a world heritage site and a superb location for photography-in fact, it’s something of a togger’s cliche, but oh well! I was pretty pleased with the shots I took (there’s some more on my Flickr page, link to the left there) We then went for a bit of lunch at The Castle Inn, in West Lulworth which was great, before we made our way home along some great winding B-roads and duel carriageways-perfect roads for the MG!
A really wonderful, relaxing day and without a doubt, a perfect Sunday.

Forza Motorsport 3 Demo-My impressions
Sep 25th
The demo for Forza Motorsport 3 was released yesterday, and like the excited little boy I am, I downloaded it as soon as I could.

Forza 3, looking very good.
With five cars to chose from, (MINI Cooper John Cooper Works, Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X, Ferrari California, Audi R8 FSi and a Porsche 911 GT3 RS-R) the demo gives a nice selection of metal to play with, and it’s clearly a great move on from Forza 2. The improved physics make for some really exciting racing, as I found out when during my first race I smacked the MINI I was driving into the side of a SEAT Ibiza, only for a VW Scirocco to pile into us, go over the top of the MINI and roll twice, ending up on it’s roof. Somebody call the Marshalls!
The graphics looked great, with the cars nicely detailed, and the interiors, a first for a Forza game, look great too. It doesn’t seem to be quite as sharp as Gran Turismo 5, but I’m still very impressed. The full game promises some pretty exciting features, and I can’t wait to start getting to grips with the car customisation.
Roll on the 23rd of October!
Glorious Goodwood
Sep 18th
Wow. Another throughly excellent day at the Goodwood Revival.
Some outstanding cars were on display, but the Revival is so much more than a car show, the atmosphere, the effort people put into the costumes and sense of occassion all add up to make it one of the ‘must attend’ events for anyone who loves classic motoring

Mini Cooper S at Madgwick Corner
This year was even better, since as the Mini was celebrating it’s 50th anniversary, the little car received some extra attention. From Mr Bean driving his Mini around from the roof, to the 30 Cooper S’ (well, 29 Cooper S’ and a lone Hornet) battling it out for the St. Mary Trophy, Goodwood 2009 was all about the world’s favourite small car, and I thought it was fantastic. From the ladies at Glam Cabs, to the dashing chaps in their RAF uniforms, the sights of old cars, the smell of Castrol and the roar of WWII planes over head, it’s as if you’ve stepped back in time. A truly magical day.

The pefect mini MPV!

I’d quite like to drive…

A Triumph Dolomite.
It wouldn’t even have to be a Sprint.
To me there’s just something achingly cool about Triumph’s 70′s saloon. The styling is just right, and leagues ahead of what British Leyland’s other branches offered, such as the Allegro and Marina. In production for just eight short years, the Dolomite soon got the attention of any motorsport fan, it’s front engine, rear wheel drive layout making it a successful Touring and Rally car, winning the British Touring Car Championship in 1975.

Another one for my garage someday
The one to own though was the Sprint, with it’s 16v engine, alloy wheels and vinyl roof, boasted almost 130 BHP, it was a formidable little sports saloon, and a credit to Triumph, further cementing Leyland’s vision for the marque as the British BMW (ironic, then that today, in 2009, the Triumph name is owned by BMW).
The Dolly was the last car independently produced by Triumph, it was succeeded by the Honda developed Acclaim, and the Triumph name was put out to pasture in 1984.
Today, there aren’t too many Dolly’s left on the UK’s roads, making them that little bit more special, I very nearly bought one once too, but just couldn’t scrape the money together. Somethings never change!
The Buzz of the job
Sep 11th
Last night I finished up an article I’ve been working on for an upcoming issue of What Diesel? and found myself in a field, just the other side of Crediton, surrounded by cars.
Half a dozen Triumph 2000s being broken for spares, a Commer van ready for restoration, a rubber bumper MGB, rotting slowly away into the field in which it was sat. And do you know what? I couldn’t have been happier. Here I was, sipping tea and discussing cars with a couple of passionate and enthusiastic car lovers, just like me. And the best bit? I get to photograph it, write about it, and see it all in print. I honestly think I’d go to the ends of the Earth for a car story.
You can’t beat the buzz of the job.
Apologees for the technical problems
Sep 9th
Just a quick post to make you aware that if you’re looking through some of my older articles, then some of the text is either the wrong size, or there are odd characters included.
This is a consequence of the import from my old blog, with Blogger and I’m unable to correct this. Needless to say all my new posts here on the new site will fine and dandy.
The Credit Crunch is over!
Sep 8th
Or at least it seems to be at Vospers Fiat in Exeter, because they were totally disinterested in selling a car.
I popped into their dealership on Saturday with a good friend who is looking to take advantage of the scrappage scheme and rid herself of her decidedly manky 1996 Pea soup Green Peugeot 106. Being a thoroughly girly girl, she’s set her sights on Fiats new baby, the rather cute 500.
A good selection of 500′s on the forecourt meant we probably had a good chance of seeing the model and spec she wanted. Walking into the showroom we had to ask for some help (most salesmen will at least say ‘Hello’ when you walk into a dealers) and with my friend being a little nervous, I started asking the questions. I was told that, no, there were no other offers on the car. Still, not to worry, I then asked if perhaps the salesman might open one up, so that we could sit in it, see how big the boot is, normal car buying stuff. His reply? ‘No. Not today.’ Slightly taken aback, I asked ‘You can’t show us a car? None of them?’ He stared at me and slowly replied ‘Nope’.

Shopping for new wheels...
Needless to say we took our leave, fearful that his apathy might rub off on us. If I’m (or I’m helping some with a decision spending £10k on a shiny new car, I like to feel a bit welcome, and that the dealer is interested in me being there. Fiat clearly aren’t struggling to sell cars like the rest of the industry, based on this guy’s behaviour. So, I advised my friend to think about other cars and other dealers. There’s plenty of Fiat dealers in and around Devon.
The small car segment is now bigger than ever, with lots of choice for people to think about. There’s the Alfa MiTo, (we visited Alfa Romeo that afternoon and found the Alfa dealer much more friendly and interested.) which looks set to take sales from BMWs MINI. Also there’s Ford’s new Ka, based on the 500 and with similarly funky styling. Overall, the best value was with Vauxhall, who offered a Corsa 1400 SXi, with scrappage discount coming in at £10,000 with a years free insurance.
A cracking deal, no doubt, just a shame to Corsa doesn’t match the funky Fiat’s looks.
Warning. Idiot at work
Sep 7th
Yup. I did it. I broke my nice shiny new site. Still, I did a good job of it, didn’t I!
Hopefully now thanks to Nick from Smarter Web Design and my brother’s decision to take a back-up of my site, everything should be as it was before the prat typing this post stuffed everything up. So there we go, I’m back.
I’ll try not to ruin it all again.
Sorry.
Another video game post
Sep 6th
Just a quick, really, but as you know I love videogames, especially driving games. Well a group of us from www.themgzs.co.uk have decided to start our own, online BTCC style championship. In previous posts I’ve mention my replicas of some of the current BTCC cars. Well, I decided that since I’m going to be online, I’d advertise my shiny new website on the car!

Look at my lovely URL!
It’s just a bit of fun, but should be darn good laugh over the next few Monday nights.
This is, erm, new…

Well, here we are, on WordPress.
Bit posh, isn’t it? I’ve moved from my old blog so that I can try and showcase a bit more of my work here than I could on Blogger.
Please bear with me, some stuff isn’t working yet and I won’t lie, I find WordPress a bit of a pig to use at the moment Most of my previous blog posts from the old place are here, although some of the font sizes are a bit hit and miss because of the way they’re imported. Don’t ask me how, or why, because I’m still learning!
Cheers,
